Application of computer-based symbolic analysis in analog design

color coded resistors

Analog design goes hand in hand with symbolic analysis, which if done by hand, is cumbersome, time-consuming and error-sensitive.

SLiCAP (Symbolic Linear Circuit Analysis Program) is a symbolic SPICE program that uses MATLAB and its Symbolic Math Toolbox for deriving and solving design eqations. It accepts a spice netlist as input and can be used in combination with LTspice.

One-day seminar

This one day seminar consists of two parts: a seminar part in the morning and a workshop part in the afternoon. Enrollment not yet started.

Seminar session

During the seminar the operation of the MATLAB version of SLiCAP will be explained and demonstrated. The following topics will be addressed:

  • Theory of operation of SLiCAP

  • Built-in models

  • Analysis types

  • Way of working

  • Using the results in MATLAB

  • Generating HTML reports

Workshop session

During the workshop participants will work in groups on topics selected form the list below, guided by the instructor(s).

  • Determination of circuit component values from prototype circuits with performance requirements

  • Determination of requirements for the GB product, the input impedance and the output impedance of an operational amplifier for a given amplifier configuration with bandwidth requirements

  • Determination of requirements for the equivalent input noise sources of an operational amplifier for a given camplifier configuration with noise requirements

  • Determination of device geometry and biasing conditions for input MOS or BJT stage for a given amplifier configuration with noise requirements

  • Determination of budgets for the standard deviation of offset voltages and bias currents of operational amplifiers and the determination of resistor tolerances for a given amplifier configuration with requirements for the biasing accuracy and stability
